Democrat Candidate for President Joe Biden Apologizes to Serbs for NATO Airstrikes In 1999

Biden's comments came on August 16, after talks in Belgrade with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic. They mark the first such gesture by a high-ranking U.S. official. U.S.-led NATO forces launched 11 weeks of airstrikes against Yugoslavia, forcing the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo in June 1999. (RFE/RL's Balkan Service) Yougoslavia under the leadership of dictator Slobodan Milošević commited genocide against the innocent Albanian people of Kosovo, the Croats and Bosnians. According to the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Yugoslav Wars resulted in the death of 140,000 people. The Humanitarian Law Center estimates that in the conflicts in the former Yugoslav republics at least 130,000 people were killed.
